How to Add a PayPal Donate Button to Your WordPress Website

WordPress

If you are a regular reader of blogs, you may have noticed an increasing number of sites displaying a “PayPal Donate” button in order to receive small donations from readers to go towards the running costs and general upkeep. If you have a strong and loyal reader-base, PayPal donations is something you can take advantage of to raise some much-needed funds for your website.

In this tutorial, we will show you how to place a donate button in your posts, pages or sidebar.

Creating a PayPal Donate Button

In order to create a donate button for your website, you will need to have a PayPal account. If you are not already signed up, you can do this free by visiting the PayPal website.

To take advantage of this service and begin receiving payments, you will need to upgrade your account to a Premier or Business account – this too can be done free.

Once your account is set up, go to Merchant Services from the top menu and click on the Donate link below Create Buttons. PayPal will then take you to a screen that allows you to create and customize your button in simple steps.

When you have settled on the button you wish to display on your site, click on Create Button. You will then be given two codes, one for Website and one for Email. We are going to use the former. Copy the link, as you’ll need it to create your donate button on WordPress.

Adding a Donate Button to a Sidebar

Adding a donate button to a sidebar will mean it is always visible on your site, regardless of what page the visitor is using. To get it set up, go to Appearance > Widgets and drag and drop the Text widget over to your sidebar.

Give your Text box a title (optional) and insert the following code:

For a Simple Donate button:

<a href="Copied URL from PayPal" target="_blank" rel="nofollow"><img src=" https://www.paypal.com/en_US/i/btn/btn_donate_LG.gif" alt="" /></a>

For a Donate button with payment merchant icons:

<a href="Your Email URL that you got from PayPal" target="_blank" rel="nofollow"><img src= "https://www.paypal.com/en_US/i/btn/btn_donateCC_LG.gif" alt="" /></a>

Save the widget to confirm the change.

Adding a Donate Button to a Post or Page

To add your Donate button to a new or existing post of page, in the edit page, select the HTML Editor view and paste in one of the above codes, wherever you would like the button to be displayed within the content.  Click on Publish or Update (depending on whether it is a new or existing post or page) and your button will be displayed.

If you do not like the donate button images provided, feel free to create your own and replace the link.
