How to Create Tabs in WordPress

WordPress

If your website contains a lot of content, displaying it in a way that visually appeals to visitors can be difficult. You want to show off the best of what you have to offer, but do not want to do it in a way that affects the layout or function of your pages. The more content you try to cram into your site, the easier it becomes for a visitor to get lost in endless information, some of which they might not necessarily be interested in.

Fortunately, there is a solution: tabs.

You will be familiar with how tabs work from your web browser; how they help to skip between websites without having to close pages. Tabs for WordPress work in the same way and are fantastic for allowing you to organize your content so that it is more intuitive for users.

Tabs, as with most of the other great things in WordPress, can be achieved using a plugin. And there are numerous plugins to choose from. In this article, we are going to look at some of the best.

Post UI Tabs

Post UI Tabs is a free plugin that lets you create jQuery tabs inside posts, pages or post types using simple shortcodes inside the post editor. It is simple to use and comes with a great selection of UI themes, so you are sure to find something that matches your site. If you prefer to customize tabs to match your content, the plugin makes it easy to do so with the creation of a custom stylesheet.

Easy Responsive Tabs

Easy Responsive Tabs is a bootstrap 3.0 compatible plugin that is very popular with developers and is fully responsive. It works by adding TinyMCE buttons to the post editor and allows full customization of the CSS to create tabs that match your theme. Features include, top and bottom tabs and tab colour settings.

WordPress Post Tabs

Available as a free version or premium offerings of $9 (single site) and $25 (multisite), WordPress Post Tabs is one of the most comprehensive tabs plugins there is. Theme integration is seamless and the range of features allows you to create virtually any kind of tab.

The free version comes with a good set of features including three styles, “quicktag”, unlimited tabs per post or page, and a custom CSS style box. However, the premium packages are well worth a look, adding a further nine styles, admin integrated style editor, a widget placeholder, nested tabs, linked tabs, efficient scrolling and more on the free download.

Tab Slide

If you are looking for a no-frills approach to tab creation, Tab Slide might well be the best choice on this list. It is super easy to use and powerful enough to allow for a highly customizable sliding shelf. Tab size, page sources, opacity and positioning can all be edited, and widgets, videos, images, posts, contact forms, menus and RSS feeds can all be added within tabs.

There are plenty more excellent tab plugins out there, but the ones we have listed here should provide you with everything you need to organize your website.
