In recent years, Facebook has become an increasingly influential news source and the place where many people find out about breaking stories. Because of this, there has been a dramatic rise in the number of bloggers quoting Facebook statuses from celebrities and the like in their posts. Rather than simply linking to a status, Facebook has now made it possible to embed posts anywhere on the Web, making it easier for bloggers to provide a source and improving the experience for readers.
Any status post that has been made publicly available (with a small globe next to the date) on any page or profile can be embedded and here’s how you can add them to your WordPress posts.
Manually embedding a Facebook status
To manually embed a Facebook status in WordPress, the first thing you will need to do is copy the URL of the post. The URL can be found by clicking on the date of the post in your timeline – this will take you to an individual page for that thread.
Next, go to the Embedded Posts page of the Facebook Developers site, paste in the code and click Get Code. A pop-up window will appear showing two codes. Copy the first code (HTML5) and paste it below the <body> tag in your header.php file (you will only need to do this once). The second code can now by copy and pasted into any WordPress post or page, similar to how you would paste in the iframe code of a YouTube video.
Save and preview the post to see the status embedded within your text.
Using a plugin to embed a Facebook status
Manual embedding is by no means difficult but if you’re looking for a neater and more fuss-free solution, a plugin is probably the best way to embed a status post.
The plugin you need to use is the official Facebook plugin for WordPress. To download it, go to Plugins > Add New and enter ‘Facebook’ in the search field. Find the plugin and click on Install, followed by Activate when installation is complete.
Embedding posts is only one of the features offered by the Facebook plugin and if your blog has any integration with the social network, this is something you definitely need.
Once the plugin has been installed and activated, simply copy the URL of the Facebook post that you want to embed and paste it in its own line on any post or page on your site. Save the post or page and then click on Preview to view it. You should now see the status embedded right where you wanted it.
