Video marketing has never been as important as it is today. You’re missing out if you fail to add videos to at least some of your content. However, it is not as easy as one might think to add a video to the Joomla CMS. There are certain processes for adding videos from the popular sites such as Vimeo and YouTube so they display in the correct manner.
How Joomla Alters Your Videos
First of all, you need to understand that Joomla removes many common video elements for security reasons. These include aspects of HTML and iFrame. Some of these filtering features will, therefore, need to be disabled.
Step 1 – Editing TinyMCE
TinyMCE is the primary editor for Joomla, so, to begin with, go to Extensions>Plugin Manager. You should see the ‘Editor-TinyMCE’. Click on it and the settings page will open. Locate the ‘Prohibited Elements’ tab.
Scroll down until you find ‘Script.applet.iframe’. This is the element that causes many of the problems with the videos. Simply delete anything that relates to ‘iframe’ to disable it. You can now embed iframe videos into your content.
Some Joomla experts advise against this procedure, but it is the only way to get videos to render correctly without changing the CMS altogether.
Step 2 – Making Changes to Global Configuration Settings
Joomla may decide to filter the iframe tag based on your user type. This can make the change just implemented irrelevant. To get around this, go to System on the top bar and check the Global Configuration page. Go to the Text Filters tab where there should be lots of different user groups.
Your user should group should be set to No Filtering. If you don’t know what user group you are, simply set all groups to No Filtering.
Step 3 – Embedding YouTube Videos
Now you can get to the task of embedding YouTube videos on your Joomla page. You will have to find the iframe embed code first. Take the video you want to embed from YouTube and click on the ‘Share’ button. You’ll see a snippet of code under the heading of ‘Embed’.
This is the code you need to add to wherever you want that video to display. Thankfully, Joomla does not force you to do anything complex with the code. Just click on the Source Code icon. A box will pop up; go ahead and paste the code into this box and the video should appear.
Once everything is ready, click the ‘OK’ button, and your changes will be saved. Your video will appear on your page and can then be played.
But What About Other Websites?
There’s no denying that YouTube is the easiest website to show videos from. But the principle is the same for any video sharing website. You need the code from the site, and then you have to embed it using the Source Code button.
You can also change the code to make the video play from a particular time segment. Usually, you can pause the video at the time you want it to play to make the code change.
Add in this new code and the video will always play from the starting point you stipulate.
