Vine is the hottest social video site of the moment and its six-second clips can be seen all over Facebook and Twitter. As a WordPress blogger, Vine clips are a great way to increase traffic and engage with your visitors, especially if your blog is optimised for mobile.
In this week’s tutorial, we will show you how you can make the most of Vine by embedding them in to your content.
Embed a Video via Vine
The quickest and easiest way to embed a single Vine video is to do it directly from the site or mobile app. This works in much the same way as embedding a YouTube video or Flickr photo and involves copying and pasting the embed code of the Vine.
In the bottom right corner of a video, click on the menu and select Embed. On the next page choose whether you want a Postcard (includes your Vine username and video name) or Simple (just the video) and set the size for the video. Copy the <iframe> code and paste it into the Text editor of your WordPress post or page.
From the Vine mobile app, click on the menu at the bottom of a video and select Share this post. From the next menu, click on Embed and email link will open. Simply email the link, open it and choose the options as you did from the Vine website.
Embed a Video Using a Plugin
For a more complete embed solution, there are a couple of excellent WordPress plugins that can be used to add Vines to your content.
The first of these plugins is Vine Embed, which is excellent if you plan to add Vines to your site regularly.
Once the plugin is installed and activated on your site, all you need to do is find the video you want to use and copy and paste its URL into your content. The plugin will then automatically embed the video when the post or page is published.
The second plugin is Artiss Vine Embed. The great thing about this plugin is that it allows you to change the size and type of video, although it does rely on shortcodes for embeds.
With the plugin installed and activated, it will place a Vine Embed option in your media player and allow you to configure default controls. You can then embed the videos using shortcodes – some of examples of which can be found on the official plugin description page.
Another great benefit of using Artiss Vine Embed is the addition of Google compatible metadata to videos, which is excellent for SEO.
To install either of these plugins, go to Plugins > Add New from your WordPress dashboard and enter the name of the plugin into the search field. When WordPress has found the plugin, click on Install and then Activate to complete the installation.
