Anyone that publishes a blog on WordPress shares one common goal: to be read. Whether you write daily, weekly or even post just a couple of times a year, you want your content to reach as many people as possible. Thanks to its huge user base and in-built SEO qualities, WordPress provides a great platform for you to get your posts read without you having to do anything. However, if you are willing to put in a little bit of work, you can increase views and boost traffic dramatically.
In this post, we are going to look at some of the simplest ways to get your content read by as many people as possible.
One of the easiest ways to get your posts read is to harness an audience that you already have – your friends and followers on social media. WordPress.com has a tool called ‘Publicize’ that is designed to help you automatically share posts across social media.
To use Publicize go to Settings > Sharing from your dashboard and choose which social networks you wish to connect with from the list (Facebook, Google+, Twitter, Path, Tumblr and LinkedIn) by clicking on Connect. You will be asked to authorize the connection before it can be confirmed.
Once you’ve done this, you will notice a Publicize section in your Publish box when creating a new post. From this box, you can change which social networks you want to promote the post on by clicking on the Edit link.
Pay for Traffic
Paying for traffic often has a stigma attached to it, but using quality sites such as StumbleUpon and PR Newswire (if you are a business) is completely ethical and very effective. Rates are cheap and it is a great way to increase views.
Be Easy to Follow
The simplest way to build awareness is to make your blog as easy as possible to follow. The Follow Blog Widget is a tool that lets your readers sign up to receive your posts via email and can be added to your sidebar by going to Appearance > Widgets.
Also in your widgets is the ‘Follow’ button, which allows other WordPress users to follow your blog at the click of a button. With over 22% of all websites using WordPress, the potential of the Follow button is vast.
Adding categories and tags to your posts will make it easier for people to find your blog. If you publish content related to current news stories, tags will really help boost your reader numbers. To ensure these are effective, refrain from using too many tags. The general rule of thumb is to keep the combined number of assigned categories and tags below 15, that way you will have more chance of appearing in the WordPress Reader.
Comment and Encourage Comments
A great way to increase views is to increase engagement with readers. This can be done by encouraging people to comment on your posts, while at the same time commenting on the posts of others. Here is a good post from WordPress on how you can get more comments.
