Google Analytics is a service that is free to anyone and can provide you with data on the performance of your website by delivering stats about how your visitors use your site. You can then use this information to improve underperforming areas of your website and place more focus on the pages that are performing well.

To get Google Analytics, you will firstly need to sign up; you can do this by visiting http://www.google.com/analytics/

Creating an account takes no more than a few minutes, requiring only your web address and your acceptance of the Terms and Conditions. Oncee your account is set up, you will be given a code that you should take down and save somewhere safe.

Installing Google Analytics

There are two ways in which you can go about installing Google Analytics on your WordPress site: the easy way and the hard way. Let’s start with the hard way.

  1. Installing Google Analytics Manually
  2. The hard way requires a manual installation and will involve you delving into the site code. If you are uncomfortable with this, you should probably skip this section and jump to the easy way.

To carry out a manual installation you will need to firstly go Appearance > Editor on your WordPress dashboard. Google Analytics is a JavaScript tracker so you will want to install it somewhere that loads every time, such as the head tags or footer.

Using the latter as the example, go to your theme editor (Appearance > Theme Editor), find footer.php and click on it; from here, scroll to the bottom of the code and go copy your Google Analytics code (the one you took a note of earlier) into the space between </div><!–  #footer end  –> and </body>. Once this is done, simply click ‘Update File’ and away you go.

  3. Installing Google Analytics with a WordPress Plugin
  4. As code can be a bit daunting, many of you will prefer the easy way; this method is done by installing the Google Analytics for WordPress plugin. To get the plugin, you need to go to Plugins > Add New on the dashboard and use the search box to find the plugin. When you have done this, click ‘Install Now’ and enter the code when asked. That’s literally all there is to it!

All of your Analytics settings can be found under Settings > Google Analytics in the WP Dashboard.

Google Analytics comes with many benefits that can really increase traffic and the SEO performance of your website. Use this guide to help you install it today.
