Blogger is an excellent free tool by Google that makes it easy to set up and maintain a blog. However, if you have ambitions to one-day turn your blog into a fully functional website, Blogger simply does not offer the control or range of features of a self-hosted platform such as WordPress.
Thousands of people move their content from Blogger over to WordPress every year and WP makes it as easy as possible for them to do so. In this tutorial, we will guide you through the migration process without losing traffic or subscribers.
Setting up on WordPress
In order to make the move to WordPress, you first need your own domain name and hosting service provider. There are dozens of options out there, many of which offer 1-Click install to take the hard work out of set up. We created a list of the best WordPress hosting providers to help you choose.
Once you have WordPress installed, you can start importing your content from Blogger.
Importing Blogger Content to WordPress
WordPress has a fantastic built in plugin called ‘Blogger Importer’ that is designed to move all categories, posts, comments and images over to WordPress.org. To use this, log in to your new admin area and go to Tools > Import in left hand sidebar.
Select Blogger from the list of import options and click on Install Now.
On the next page, click on Activate Plugin & Run Importer, followed by Authorize to let WordPress access your Blogger account.
Once you’ve done this, you will be shown a status page with information on the number of posts, comments, images and links available for import. Click on Import to start the process.
When content has been imported, the Import button will change to Set Authors – click on this to go to the Author mapping page where you can assign all posts to your WordPress author name. Click on Save Changes and you will be greeted with a message of congratulations – you are all imported and ready to start your new life on WordPress.
Keeping Traffic and Subscribers
Now that you’ve completed the move to your new site, you need to let your readers know so that they don’t miss out.
The first thing to do is go to Settings > Permalinks from the left hand sidebar and select the URL structure you were using on Blogger.
Next, go to Plugins > Add New, enter ‘Blogger to WordPress’ in the search field and follow the links to install and activate it. This plugin will help you automatically redirect Blogger readers to your new site.
Once activated, go to Tools > Blogger to WordPress Redirection and click on Start Configuration. Next to your Blogger URL click on Get Code and make a copy of the generated HTML.
Head over to your Blogger website and click on Template from the dashboard, followed by Edit HTML on the active theme. Replace the existing theme code by pasting in your copied code and click on Save Template.
Blogger will now automatically redirect users to your WordPress homepage or specific post.
The final step in the process is to redirect any RSS Feed and subscribers. This can be done by going to Settings > Other from the Blogger dashboard and entering your WordPress feed URL in the Post Feed Redirect URL field.
