Joomla is great content management system that is used by millions of people to publish their websites; however, it is not the most straightforward of platforms and lacks some of the usability and range of functions available on WordPress. If you have decided to move from Joomla to WordPress then you will want to make sure you can take all of your content with you. In this article, we will show you how to migrate with all of your stuff intact.
To move from Joomla to WordPress, the first thing you will need to do is get set up with a web host and install WordPress. A WP installation is a very simple process and most reputable web hosts now have tools that will automatically install the CMS at the click of a button. If you decide to complete the installation yourself, you can use our how to create a site with WordPress tutorial to help you through the process.
Installing FG Joomla to WordPress
If you are new to WordPress, you will quickly realise that almost everything here can be accomplished with a plugin. While it is perfectly possible to manually move a Joomla site over to WordPress, we are going to use the free and simple plugin, FG Joomla to WordPress. This plugin is designed to make moving categories, posts, tags, images and other media from old CMS to new as fuss-free as possible and will save you a lot of time.
Once you have your WP site up and running, go to Plugins > Add New, enter ‘FG Joomla to WordPress’ in the search field and click on Search.
Under the plugin title, click on Install Now and WordPress will take care of the installation. When the process is complete (it takes no more than a few seconds), click on Activate Plugin.
Importing Joomla Content
After the plugin has been activated, go to Tools > Import and click on Joomla (FG) from the list of available tools. This will take you to the Joomla Importer for WordPress page where you can begin transferring your content.
On this page you will need to provide Joomla website and database information – this can be found by going to Global Configuration > Server from your Joomla admin panel or by accessing the configuration.php file in the root folder of your site via a FTP client.
When you have provided the necessary information, scroll down to Behavior and check the necessary boxes. Make sure that Force media import is checked and click on Import content from Joomla to WordPress.
The plugin will now begin importing your content over to WP. Depending on how much is being transferred, the process may take a while to complete.
When all content has been imported, go to the Joomla (FG) importer page and click on Modify internal links. This will complete the installation and make you a fully-fledged member of the WordPress community!
