How to Set Up a Specific Home Page in WordPress

WordPress

Before WordPress was a fully functional content management system it was a simple blogging platform, and the blog element will always remain a fundamental part of what WordPress is all about.

By default, the front page of your WordPress site will resemble a blog, displaying your most recent posts. If you are a business, you may want your site to appear more corporate-like, so more of a content management system style will probably better suited. This can be achieved by creating a specific home page, or static page, for your site, so that visitors always land on the same page and can navigate their way around the site from there. In this guide, we’ll show you how to get such a page set up.

Creating a New Page

We are going to go on the assumption that you do not already have a page in place to use as a static home page. If you do, then you can simply move on to the next part.

In your WordPress dashboard go to Pages > Add New and create a new page called “Home”. Add the content that you want the page to display and click on Publish to confirm the page.

Doing the same thing again, create a second page called “Blog” – this is where your posts will be shown. You can call the page whatever you want (i.e. “News” or “Latest Posts”), so long as it is related to the theme of the page.

Do not add any content to the “Blog” page; simply input the title and click on Publish.

Display a Static Page

Now that you have created a static page, you are going to want WordPress to display it as the home page of your site. To do this, go to Settings > Reading and where it says Front page displays, check the option for A static page. Under A static page, you will have options for Front page and Post page. In the drop down menu for Front Page, select your “Home” page and in Post page select “Blog” (or whatever you may have called it).

Click on Save Changes at the bottom of the page to confirm these selections.

Changing the Permalink

The above two steps are all you need to have a static page set up on your website, but to have things looking like an official home page, you’ll probably want to change the permalink. By default, WordPress displays permalinks with numbers and question marks, which is not great aesthetically or for SEO purposes. To change from the default, go to Settings > Permalinks and under Common Settings, check the option for Post name and click on Save Changes. This will display the URL for your home page as www.yourwebsite.com/home.

That’s it, all done. You now have your very own specific home page for visitors to enjoy and a separate blog page that gives your website more of a professional business feel.
