Most people these days have a Facebook account and the big blue social network offers excellent integration with WordPress, providing some awesome social plugins such as the much seen “like” button and the “share” button. Another useful plugin available is the Comment Box, a feature that allows users to comment on your site with a layer of Facebook authentication.
As most Facebook users stay logged in to the site, the Comment Box plugin is an excellent way to generate more comments on posts. It also does away with anonymous troll comments and allows comments to be shared with friends, giving your blog exposure to a larger audience. Getting set up with this feature is straightforward and should take no more than a few minutes to have it up and running. Let’s get started…
Install the Facebook Comments for WordPress Plugin
The first thing you will need to do is head on over to your WordPress dashboard and install the Facebook Comments for WordPress plugin. To do this, go to Plugins > Add New and search for the plugin in the search box. Once you’ve found it click on ‘Install Now’ and you’re done.
Create New App
When the Facebook plugin is activated, it will ask you to enter your application ID and secret key, to get this information you will need to register a new application on Facebook. Go to the Facebook Application page and register to become a developer – this only requires some details about you and the acceptance of terms and conditions. Next, click on the Create New App icon in the top right corner.
A lightbox pop-up box will appear asking for your application name and more T&C’s accepting. Your name can be anything you want it to be – something like Yoursite.com Comments should do the job. Enter the captcha and Facebook will take you to the basic information page of the app, which is where you will find the App ID and secret key.
Once you have the App ID and secret key you will need to go back to your WordPress Plugin and input the data. In the dashboard go to Settings > Facebook Comments and paste the information.
Customize your Settings
When the app information has been entered, you will be free to customize your settings area. Here you can decide how many comments you want per page, the width of your comment area and whether you want a dark or light color scheme.
That’s pretty much all there is to it. This plugin is a simple and easy way to set up comments for WordPress and benefit from improved interaction from readers. There is currently no way to backup comments, so deactivating the app will mean losing reader input; however, with an increasing number of sites using the Facebook Comments, this is one plugin that is definitely here to stay.
